Some times things don’t work out as planned.
The cunning plan was to go to Devon take a few nice autumn pictures and then give a talk to Newton Abbot Photo Club in the evening.
I drove to Devon in the early morning in soft sunshine thinking my luck had changed as it wasn’t raining. I met up with a friend Paula Graham ARPS who is an excellent photographer and she drove us around Dartmoor in her Landrover.
We had lunch at a pub in Widecombe in the Moor on Dartmoor, it was a fine warm autumn day so we left our coats in the Landie. While we were having a baguette for lunch the sky absolutely opened and it rained and rained. We finished lunch and had to get back to the landrover parked about 250yds away and it was still chucking it down. Paula tried to borrow an Umbrella from the pub. No deal.
She came back with two large black bin bags, so we broke a hole in the bottom of the bag so we could see, put the big bags on and headed out in to the storm.
By the time we arrive back at Paula’s house it had stopped raining and faint shafts of evening light passed over the distant hills.
The shot posted above was one of the best taken that day and was taken on Paula’s Patio – she has a beautiful house in the middle of nowhere with stunning views all year round – some people have all the luck and taste!

Hi Mufidah – This shot is a 6×17 format which could be the problem. I usual upload pictures with 800px on the long side I tried this as normal and it wouldn’t open properly. Anyway I have loaded a smalller copy that will open to a slightly larger size. I hope you like it. Thanks

Hi Mufidah – The lighting was fading quickly so what little light there was, was enhanced in Lightroom. If the light is not there it can not be added later. In Monochrome lighting & texture are key elements of the picture.

Hi Paula – Thanks for the comment. Just a 6×17 crop (Hasselblad Xpan format) from the bottom of the file, a bit of the same old jiggery pockery in Lightroom and bobs my auntie again.

Great looking photo. So this is a negative scan? The tones you got in lightroom almost look like a platinum print.

Hi James – thanks for the appreciation. I have been doing electric pictures since 2001/2 I can’t quite remember, I did do a few scans a year or two ago but quickly lost iinterest. I stilll have my darkroom & equipment and might give it a trial go again to do darkroom and digital Lith printing. The idea with post wasn’t to do a Platinum print but its an idea for the future. This picture probably has too much contrast for a Platinum print. The post is split toned – if this was done in the darkroom it would be sepia and gold toned. Darkroom gold toning adds a cool tone to the shadows.

Yes the light over the English countryside: always superbly English and dramatically beautiful. A great photograph in that fading light.
