The Cullins – Isle of Skye March 2016

The art and craft of black and white printing is in starting with a useable digital negative. If you think your digital negatives have little potential for creating an expressive picture, think again. The smaller picture is the same file as the feature image without post-processing. Low contrast in the camera allows controlled global and selective contrast to be added in the printing. Only beginners think a bright contrasty day is good for taking pictures. In your hands, you holdRead more

Photo Hot Hint No 1 – Join in

Misty Cullins – Isle of Skye March 2016 Black and white photography is about contrast or differing brightnesses of illumination. The picture above works for me because of the simplicity of the lighter tone of the snow on the peaks against a darker mountain and sky. I am starting a new series of blog posts using some of the hot hints I included in my latest book called “The Dark Art – A black and white digital printing workshop manual”  Read more

Afon Dwyryd – Snowdonia 2o12 The Dark Art a black and white digital printing workshop manual is currently being put together in Adobe Indesign by Trev in Spain. Trev taught me a new term I had not come across before “page furniture” meaning everything that is not text or pictures. Much of my time is taken up with books and the selection of pictures to illustrate books, along with caption writing for the How to See Photographically Workshop Manual manuscript.  Read more

Testing sanity

Gullfoss Waterfall – Iceland 2011, The first picture I put on WordPress in 2011 A good way to test your sanity and patience is to buy a computer with Windows 10 as the operating system. The problems found and overcome so far: – 6 hours of Windows updates and installing – Network passwords – The DVD player is recognised, but it will not open, solution to buy a cheap Ext DVD drive for very occasional use – Updating of the soundcardRead more

Techies not needed

Bay of Laig – Isle of Eigg – Western Isles – 2006  Hurrah problem sorted – the work group was not switched on?? I have no idea why not. After six hours of updating Win 10, Photoshop and Bridge would instal properly. New technology is not quite so bad after all when you only want it to work with having to RTFM!
