The digital monochrome print talk – again

I am off to hopefully sunny north Devon to give a talk at Barnstable CC this evening. This is a highly interactive talk as all mine are. I gave the same presentation at Bridgwater PS on Tuesday evening the audience asked a lot of interesting questions. I ended up only showing about half of the prints I had taken to show in the first half because the Q&A was going so well. The second half of the talk is aRead more

Netham Park enhancement

Wild flowers in their environment, high rise flats in the background. Shallow depth of field at f2.8 to suggest shapes and let the viewer decide what the shapes are. Question Has anybody experience of getting raw files out of Aperture 3 and import them in to Lightroom 5? I get by with a little help from my friends

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”  — Aristotle I am indebted to two friends for assistance with this post Rod Wainwright ARPS and Les Loosemore ARPS. Rod sent me the Aristotle quote and Les wrote to me about “the lens appropriately focussed on your next masterpiece”. When I thanked Rod for the quote I said I would have to think about an appropriate picture to go with the words. ThisRead more

My camera doesn’t understand me

Your camera does not know or understand you, what you want to say photographically, how you see, what you feel and think – it has NO visual and emotional intelligence. Sorry to say that it does not even love you. All it does is record the brightness of the light reflected on to the sensor. So perhaps some thought might be given to controlling the light recording box to enable an end result that is visually interesting and communicates withRead more

After Stieglitz

Last week I went to the V&A in London and saw their current photography exhibition. Part of the show explored the idea of modernism in photography. Alfred Stieglitz was the driving force behind the photo-succession in the US which put forward the idea that pictorial-ism was an old fashioned romantic idea largely based on the painting and not photography. Trees (right) – Forest of Dean 2006 (after Alfred Stieglitz 1912) is purposely very dark. The diagonal composition is a recurringRead more

Strangers on the shore

Bournemouth sea shore early evening. Post processing in Lightroom 5 and Color Efex Pro 4. The original idea was a warm tone picture with heavy film grain. However I feel the cool tone works well with this picture. You will probably need to make the picture bigger to see the grain by holding down the control key and scrolling the mouse wheel. Taken with a cheap 50mm f1.8 lens at f1.8 in fading light. As with all digital photography exposeRead more

Wild flower meadow

Finally the idea, timing and equipment came together. I had driven past this wild flower meadow three times thinking there are picture there. Yesterday afternoon I was on my way home from seeing a client with the right equipment, time and desire to stop and take pictures. I took 90 pictures in just ten minutes according to the metadata. The results are not a typical Andy Beel picture but perhaps an antidote to what’s going on around me at theRead more
