Evening Flight

The day at Slimbridge started out with good intentions – to take sharp pictures of birds in flight. A first for me. I found lots of ways of doing it wrong. This is a shot from the end of the day when the light had almost gone around 4.30pm. 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens + 1.4x Converter. Shutter speed 1/3 sec handheld, f 4.0, ISO 200, ICM (intentional camera movement – a new acronym on me, thank you, Elizabeth). The pointRead more

Just got back

Just got back from the FOTO Alpujarras Workshop in the Sierra Nevada – Southern Spain. A really good time was had by all. Workshops are about providing a safe place for the participants to learn and try out new ideas and techniques, with explanations and guidance from the workshop leader. This shot is a little out my normal style – deliberate de-focussing, grainy saturated colour. The next workshop will be 22nd to 27th April 2015. Updated details will be onRead more

Beach Huts

This weeks talk “The Digital Monochrome Print” is for the Worcester Camera Club Digital Group. See http://www.worcestershirecameraclub.co.uk/ they meet on Thursday evenings. The featured picture is another from sunny Budleigh Salterton taken last week funnily enough called “Beach Huts”. Digital Lith Processing in Lightroom 5. I was mentioned in a post by FatMan about photographic composition a few days ago. See wordpress.com/read/blog/id/22503289/ Here the composition of the shadows of the beach huts is tending towards minimal – hopefully the viewerRead more

I get by with a little help from my friends

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.”  — Aristotle I am indebted to two friends for assistance with this post Rod Wainwright ARPS and Les Loosemore ARPS. Rod sent me the Aristotle quote and Les wrote to me about “the lens appropriately focussed on your next masterpiece”. When I thanked Rod for the quote I said I would have to think about an appropriate picture to go with the words. ThisRead more

Wild Flower Meadow 2 – to suggest is to create

I am getting the hang of colour photography now, the inoculations really helped! I was asked by Fat Man if my mono photography has gone? Below is my reply to his question. Mono hasn’t gone its just that I have found ways to explore colour. I’ve had Color Efex Pro for years and never opened it, when I did, I found it worked completely differently to Silver Efex. So I left it. Then I watched a not very good ColorRead more

Strangers on the shore

Bournemouth sea shore early evening. Post processing in Lightroom 5 and Color Efex Pro 4. The original idea was a warm tone picture with heavy film grain. However I feel the cool tone works well with this picture. You will probably need to make the picture bigger to see the grain by holding down the control key and scrolling the mouse wheel. Taken with a cheap 50mm f1.8 lens at f1.8 in fading light. As with all digital photography exposeRead more
