Austerland – Iceland

Another picture from Austerland, Iceland taken in May last year. This has not been posted before to be honest it’s a series that I had forgotten I’d taken. I say series because I took  a series of 10 pictures of Jan walk up the slope from the waterfall with my 12mm lens. I have selected to use this picture because as she moved towards the edge of the frame where I wanted her, her legs merged in to the background making her a less distinct shape on the horizon. Had I only taken one frame I would have reduced my chances of getting the picture I wanted and previsualised while looking through the viewfinder.

I processed two version of this file one in Lightroom 3 only and the other with Lr3, Cs4 and Silver Efex Pro 2. This is the SEP 2 version as I prefered the detail and contrast in the clouds brought out by the Soft Contrast control.

The design of this picture uses the corners of the frame actively. The corners of a picture can be used actively or passively. Passive use means that leading lines or the motif is not placed in or near a corner.

A big hello to all the new followers of my littl blog, why not leave a comment it won’t hurt I promise.

Hi Stian thanks for commenting. I whole heartedly agree with you, its unfortunate that Iceland is so expensive. Who knows may be next year! Andy

I like the balance of this image, both in the composition, and in the blacks and whites of the sky, land and water. The textures in the rocks are nicely brought out, but I’m still debating about the inclusion of the figure in the landscape and whether it adds or detracts to the image.

Hi Andy thanks for commenting. As might have read in my blog I am a people photograher who also tries landscape. For me this picture was always about the figure and the line of the horizon. I will see if I took one without a figure. Andy

I’m probably like you – I wait for everyone to get out of the way before I take the shot. But this is an exception. The person adds to the composition – leaning into the slope. ‘Active corners’ – that’s a new phrase for me, but I darned good one!

Hi Andy I know where you are coming from with a very wide angle lens. I usually do a combination of running to get to the front first and shouting abuse at the hapless who have no idea that I can see them in my shot. Thanks for the continued siupport. Andy

I like the texture too but Im left wondering what it would look like if you burned out the rocks and darkened the image even further. Such wonderful work Andy, regardless.

Hi Distan thanks for commenting. I think I know where you are coming from with a darker picture, may be I will do a copy and see what happens. Thanks for the idea. Andy
